I have a very distinct memory of making my first trifle. It was Victorian Day in middle school when I first encountered the term. I didn’t know back then what a trifle was, but seeing a picture of the many ingredients stacked together was enough to get my attention. I wanted to learn how to make one and little did I know that I would be in for a culinary adventure!
Trifles are gorgeous layered desserts that don’t require a lot of ingredients, though if you’re like me, you might fuss about how to get those layers looking perfect! This dessert has been around for ages and it’s said that the name “trifle” is from the old French word trufe, which means of little importance. What this actually means when viewed from a culinary perspective is that trifles are, essentially, a dessert that’s easy to put together.
If it’s your first time making a trifle, then this Mason Jar Trifle can be a great starting point! You only need three ingredients: ladyfingers, some raspberry jam, and thawed whipped topping. Of course, you should have a nice mason jar to hold them all together!
The first layer is made up of half the ladyfingers. Then, add a scoop of raspberry jam on top of it. Add the second half of the ladyfingers, finishing it off with the thawed whipped topping. It’s fairly easy and once the raspberry jam and the whipped topping settle, what you get are these beautifully constructed layers of deep reds, whites, and subtle golden-browns all colliding into each other.

- 6 ladyfingers
- 1/2 cup raspberry jam
- 1 cup thawed whipped topping
- Place 3 ladyﬁngers on the bottom of a 12-ounce Mason jar.
- Add the raspberry jam.
- Add the 3 remaining ladyﬁngers on top.
- Spoon on the whipped topping to ﬁnish the triﬂe.
- Place in the fridge to allow the ladyﬁngers to absorb the jam, about 2 hours.
