Tea is a drink for all seasons. You can serve it steaming hot or icy cold, and it will be just as delicious. Armed with a trusty thermos, I can enjoy my tea anywhere I go!

We all know how tea has a lot of health benefits, but did you know that tea made from sage was also extremely popular? One quick piece of trivia that fascinates me about sage tea is how when the French started making it, the Chinese found it so delicious that they would exchange loads and loads of Chinese tea for a fraction of the sage variant.

This recipe for sage-lemon tea puts a tangy twist on this classic brew. An herb like sage is pretty potent with mild citrus undertones, so it makes sense to add lemon to compliment its already strong flavor. The best part about making sage-lemon tea is that you’re not limited to just choosing one kind of sage. Go ahead and be creative with your palate by brewing common sage, pineapple sage, golden sage, and tricolor sage. It’s another good reason to expand your sage garden!

Like some of the most flavorful teas, it’s best to brew your sage-lemon tea using sage that hasn’t been treated with pesticide. Not only will this be safer, but you’re sure to experience all the benefits that homegrown sage has to offer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 ounce fresh sage leaves (about 45 leaves)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon zest
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Bring the water to a boil in a medium pot.
  2. Turn the water down to a simmer and add the rest of the ingredients.
  3. Allow to steep 20 to 30 minutes (to taste), stirring occasionally.
  4. Strain out the leaves and lemon zest. Serve hot or let cool and serve iced.
