My kitchen saw a revolution on a lazy Sunday afternoon when I was trying to up my mocktail game and stumbled upon Candied Citrus Wheels. These aren’t just some fancy garnish – they’re a total game-changer that’ll make you feel like a professional mixologist in your own kitchen.

I stood there with my mandoline, slicing citrus so thin you could practically read a newspaper through them. The first time I made these, I was skeptical. Could something so simple really transform my drinks? Spoiler alert: absolutely yes! Whether I’m mixing up a Ruby Red Grapefruit Spritz for my mom or creating a Garden Party Spritzer for weekend brunch with friends, these candied wheels are my secret weapon.

The process is weirdly therapeutic. You’re basically giving your citrus slices a sugar bath for about 30 minutes. Low and slow is the mantra here – rush it, and you’ll end up with bitter, sad-looking wheels. I learned that the hard way during my first attempt (RIP, first batch of citrus wheels). Pro tip: patience is your best friend. After simmering, you’ll need to let these beauties dry for a full 24 hours. I know, I know – waiting is the worst. But trust me, the result is worth every minute.

The best part? These little gems keep for up to two weeks. I’ve got a jar in my fridge that’s become my entertaining MVP. Unexpected guests? Boom. Boring drink? Not anymore. They’re like jewelry for your glass – except you can eat these accessories.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Thinly sliced citrus (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Make simple syrup with water and sugar
  2. Simmer citrus slices in syrup 30 minutes
  3. Dry on rack 24 hours
  4. Store up to 2 weeks

Notes

  • Use mandoline for even slices
  • Keep temperature low
  • Pat dry between paper towels
