This is what people think of when they think of summer squash that isn’t zucchini. This one is bulbous on the bottom and thin and curved at the top (“crookneck”). It’s slightly tougher than other summer squash which makes it great for cooking. Pick them before they get longer than 6 inches for best texture. This one is often breaded and fried, or mixed with olive oil and fresh garlic. It’s easy to dice this one, use in casseroles or add to green smoothies. Crookneck picks up the flavor of spices well.
