Get a jump on your garden with these sweet, crispy peas that are ready to eat, pod and all, in 56 days from seed to table. They’re so crunchy and sweet, you may have trouble getting the whole harvest into the kitchen before kids and adults eat them straight off the vine. Easy to grow, this bush type of peas reaches 20 to 24 inches yielding 2- to 3-inch pods with seven peas. Not only do Sugar Ann peas generate delicious food, but the delicate tendrils and white classic pea flowers create an ornamental focal point in the garden.

Sun Exposure

  • Full to partial sun (six to eight hours)

Soil pH

  • 6.0 to 7.5

Hardiness Zones

  • 4 to 9

Spacing

  • Sow 1-2 inches apart, 1/2-1 inch deep
  • Plant rows 24 inches apart
  • Dwarf vines 20-24 inches

Moisture

  • Water deeply 1 inch a week; do not let soil dry out

Notes

  • Sugar snap type
  • 51-56 days to maturity
  • First sowing should be in early spring as soon as soil can be worked
  • Last sowing should be 2 months before frost
  • Remove string from pod before eating or cooking
  • Easy to grow, freezes well
  • Delicious raw or cooked, perfect in salads or with dip
