Consumption of peas has been linked to improved blood sugar control and a lower risk of heart disease and cancer.

Since ancient times, peas have been revered for their nutritional benefits. In fact, Egyptians buried peas in their tombs to provide a snack for the afterlife.

Heart Health

Heart disease, including heart attacks and strokes, is the number one cause of death in the United States. The high fiber content of green peas and legumes has been shown to lower total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol, both of which increase the risk of heart disease when they are elevated.

Peas are full of heart-healthy minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Diets high in these nutrients may be helpful for preventing high blood pressure. Also, the antioxidants in green peas have been shown to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. They also show a protective effect on blood vessels.

Cancer Prevention

According to studies, peas’ antioxidant properties and their ability to control inflammation can reduce cancer risk. Peas also contain saponins, compounds which several studies have shown may help to prevent cancer and inhibit tumor growth. The nutrients in peas are known to lower the risk of cancer, including vitamin K, known to help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

A study in women shows that high concentrations of carotenoids, found in generous helpings of green peas, may protect against breast cancer.

Blood Sugar Health

Green peas are considered beneficial for keeping blood sugar levels in check, which is important in avoiding and controlling diabetes.

The fiber and protein content of peas is thought to help slow digestion, which, in turn, can help smooth out blood sugar levels after eating. Peas also rank low on the glycemic index scale, with a glycemic index of 22.

Bottom Line

While some further medical studies might be required to confirm the health benefits of peas, eating your own home-grown varieties is a great way to control what you eat and ensure a healthier diet.
