A Gardener’s Promise

Book Club: Soil Care Secrets A to Z

A Gardener’s Promise

By Don Nicholas

Afterword

If you’ve made it this far, you know a secret that many overlook: soil is not just “dirt.” It’s memory, energy, and life itself. It holds the laughter of children pulling carrots, the sweat of farmers bending over fields, and the quiet hum of microbes doing their ancient work unseen.

Healthy soil connects us—to our past, to our neighbors, and to the meals we share. When we care for it, we’re not only growing food; we’re building resilience, flavor, and community. We’re creating a world where gardens feed both stomachs and souls.

Your soil will never be “finished.” It is always in motion, always changing. Every compost pile you turn, every mulch layer you spread, every root you plant is part of a bigger cycle of renewal. That cycle needs you—but it also rewards you, season after season.

So here’s my gardener’s promise to you: if you honor your soil, it will honor you back—with abundance, with beauty, and with a sense of belonging to something greater than yourself.

Now close this book, grab your gloves, and go outside. Your soil is waiting.

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now.” —Garden proverb

From me, Don Nicholas, your Intrepid Gardening Reporter — may your soil be rich, your harvests bountiful, and your joy unshakable.
