When spring rolls around and those first juicy strawberries ripen out in the warm sunshine, I’ll admit I get maybe a little too excited. I adore strawberry season. I’ll often add fresh-picked strawberries to granola or oatmeal in the morning for a breakfast treat, or just enjoy them as they are. One of my favorites, however, is a strawberry smoothie.
The nice thing about strawberry season is that a few prolific plants can bear enough strawberries that if I don’t overdo it, I have plenty to freeze and save for later. The sad part of strawberry season, at least here in New England, is that it only lasts about a month, usually beginning in mid-June. Let me tell you, though, those are some transcendent weeks! That’s also when I love making this smoothie. The weather is just getting into those hot summer temperatures and the strawberries in my garden are so wonderfully refreshing.
As for this smoothie, it really is a delightful treat, and it only takes a few minutes to make. And like many recipes at Food Gardening Network, it’s easy to customize. You can easily make it vegan by using soy or oat milk and a coconut milk yogurt. Or you can go for a thicker smoothie by adding a little more yogurt and a little less milk.
And of course, if you are watching your sugar or just don’t want sugar in your smoothie, feel free to leave it out. But I like the little bit of sweetness it adds to things.
I’ll add one word of caution about blenders and ice cubes. Unless you have a higher-end blender, you definitely want to use crushed ice or small cubes. Big ice cubes and the average blender don’t always go so well together!

The first time, I followed the recipe and found it way too sweet for my taste. The second time, I simply omitted the sugar. It was plenty sweet enough for me that way.
YUM YUM so refreshing too. Martie in GA
