Scalloped Onions

You’ve probably heard of scalloped potatoes; but scalloped onions? This makes a delicious side dish that’s rich but not too heavy. This is an “approximate” recipe; you’ll gauge exactly how much bread crumbs and milk you need as you layer the dish together. Feel free to add other spices as you are inspired, depending on what else you’re making for dinner.

Scalloped Onions

You’ve probably heard of scalloped potatoes; but scalloped onions? This makes a delicious side dish that’s rich but not too heavy. This is an “approximate” recipe; you’ll gauge exactly how much bread crumbs and milk you need as you layer the dish together. Feel free to add other spices as you are inspired, depending on what else you’re making for dinner.

  • Yield: Serves 6 to 8 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 to 10 onions of your choice
  • 1 cup bread crumbs (approximate)
  • 1 stick butter, chopped
  • 1 cup milk (approximate)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Put a large pot of water on to boil.
  3. Peel onions, cut in half, and cut into 1/2-inch slices.
  4. Simmer sliced onions in a pot until they’re tender, about 10 minutes.
  5. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  6. Layer onions, bread crumbs, butter bits, and salt and pepper, ending with bread crumbs on the top.
  7. Pour milk over the onion mixture until the milk is almost to the top of the baking dish.
  8. Bake for about 30 minutes, until the milk is steaming.
  9. Cover the baking dish with foil for the last 10 minutes if the bread crumbs look like they’re going to burn.
