Oregano: How to Unlock its Unique Flavor

5 cool ways to use oregano and enjoy its taste

By Bill Dugan, Executive Editor

Oregano, a fragrant herb often associated with Mediterranean cuisine, is a versatile and aromatic addition to any kitchen. While commonly used to enhance the flavor of pasta sauces and pizza, there’s so much more that this herb has to offer. Here are five ways to use your garden-fresh oregano that go beyond the traditional:

1. Oregano-infused olive oil

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to incorporate this fragrant herb into your cooking is by infusing it into olive oil. Oregano-infused olive oil adds a burst of flavor to salads, roasted vegetables, and even grilled meats. To make this aromatic infusion, start by thoroughly washing and drying fresh oregano sprigs. Place the sprigs in a clean, dry bottle or jar, and cover it with extra virgin olive oil. Let the mixture sit for at least a week, allowing the flavors of the herb to meld with the oil. Once ready, strain out the leaves, and you’re left with a delectable olive oil that will become a kitchen staple.

2. A new kind of pesto

While basil is the traditional star of pesto, oregano can be a delightful alternative that adds a unique twist to this classic sauce. To make oregano pesto, blend fresh oregano leaves with pine nuts, garlic, Parmesan cheese, and extra virgin olive oil. Adjust the proportions to achieve your desired consistency and flavor. This unique pesto works wonders as a pasta sauce, a topping for grilled chicken, or even as a spread for sandwiches. Its bold and zesty profile sets it apart from traditional basil pesto, making it a flavorful option for those looking to experiment with their culinary creations.

Honey and oregano

3. Oregano-infused honey

Transform your honey into a culinary masterpiece by infusing it with the aromatic essence of oregano. Oregano-infused honey is a sweet and savory concoction that pairs well with both sweet and savory dishes. Begin by gently warming honey over low heat, being careful not to boil it. Add fresh oregano sprigs to the warm honey and let it steep for several hours or overnight. The result is a golden elixir with a perfect balance of sweetness and herbaceous undertones. Drizzle oregano-infused honey over cheese plates, desserts, or even use it as a glaze for roasted meats to elevate the flavors of your dishes.

4. Oregano butter

Take your butter to the next level by infusing it with the aromatic notes of oregano. This butter is a versatile and easy-to-make condiment that can be used to enhance the flavor of various dishes. Start by finely chopping fresh oregano leaves and mixing them into softened butter. Add a pinch of salt to taste. Once well combined, shape this herb butter into a log using parchment paper and refrigerate until firm. Slice off portions as needed to add a burst of flavor to grilled meats, vegetables, or simply spread it on warm bread for a delicious and aromatic twist.

Healing herbal Oregano tea

5. Tasty tea that will soothe and heal you

Beyond culinary applications, oregano also boasts potential health benefits. Oregano tea, made from fresh or dried leaves, is a soothing and aromatic beverage that can provide relief from colds, coughs, and digestive issues. To make this tea, steep a handful of fresh leaves or a teaspoon of dried oregano in hot water for about five to 10 minutes. Strain the leaves and sweeten with honey or lemon if desired. The resulting tea not only has a pleasant taste but also carries the potential antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of oregano, making it a comforting and healthful addition to your wellness routine.

Oregano, with its rich flavor profile and aromatic qualities, has the power to elevate your culinary adventures in unexpected ways. From infusing oils and honey to creating unique condiments like butter, the possibilities are endless. Experiment with these cool ways to use fragrant herb, and unlock the full potential of it in your kitchen. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or an amateur cook, you can explore new dimensions of taste and aroma, turning every meal into a delightful experience.
