Red Burgundy Okra

Red Burgundy Okra

Red Burgundy okra is an open-pollinated, heirloom variety. It produces beautiful deep red pods with green tips. Red Burgundy was an All-America Selections (AAS) winner in 1988. The pods have moderate spines and taste best when you harvest them when they’re 3 to 5 inches long. But unlike most other okra varieties, the Red Burgundy pods will still be tender at 6 to 7 inches. Red Burgundy is a good choice for pickling, stewing, or frying. When you cook these pods, they turn deep purple.

Characteristics:

  • Heirloom variety; open-pollinated
  • Plants can reach a height of 6 feet
  • Very productive
  • Pods stay tender up to 7 inches long
  • Good for frying, pickling, or stewing
  • Days to maturity: 50

Have you tried growing Red Burgundy okra? What region do you grow them in? Please tell us your experiences growing Red Burgundy okra.
