Blue Lake beans have a stellar reputation, and it’s easy to see why. The heritage pole bean has been around since 1885 and it’s a hardy, prolific performer. It yields copious amounts of stringless beans from top to bottom, each one crisp with full-bodied flavor. They are resistant to some diseases.
Characteristics:
- Matures in 62 days
- Harvest when beans are 5 to 5 1/2 inches long
- Grows to 6 to 7 feet
- Disease resistant
- Prolific yields
- Best for boiling and freezing

I prefer Kentucky Blue and Cobra. I think they produce more and longer pods.
I’ve been growing Blue Lake every year for over 30 years. Since this is a heritage variety, a few years ago I started saving my own seeds and have perfect results with subsequent generations. There is simply nothing you can buy in the store as good as these beans fresh from the garden.
Ernest – Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s such a great feeling knowing that with just a little planning and preparation you can guarantee a successful harvest year after year. I’m a big fan of pole beans because they take up less space and seem to be so much easier to harvest – and I totally agree that nothing tastes as good as the produce from your own garden.
