Baart Early Spring Wheat

Baart Early Spring Wheat

Baart Early came to the U.S. in 1900 from South Africa by way of Australia. It was extensively grown in Arizona and the Pacific Coast states through the 1930s before mechanized farming left it behind. The interest in sustainable cultivation and heritage grains has encouraged the resurgence of this spring wheat variety.

Characteristics:

  • Plant in early spring for late summer/early fall harvest
  • Has tall heads with long awns
  • Large white, semi-hard kernels and glumes
  • Mature height of 4 to 5 feet
  • An excellent bread wheat

Have you tried growing Baart Early? What region do you grow them in? Please tell us your experiences growing Baart Early wheat.
