Nagami Kumquat

Nagami Kumquat

Nagami kumquats are the most popular variety of kumquat grown in the U.S. They’re also called an oval kumquat. This tree is especially cold-hardy—down to 15 degrees F; it’s the hardiest of all the kumquat species. Its fruit is a little more on the sour side than some of the other varieties, but it still has sweet skin on the outside to offset the sour on the inside. The Nagami kumquat flowers best in regions with warm summers.

Characteristics:

  • Oval shaped fruit ripens in late winter or early spring
  • Drought-tolerant
  • Pest and disease-resistant
  • Likes full sun
  • Sweet peel, sour flesh
  • Great for making marmalade
  • Often grown as a dwarf tree, perfect for containers
  • Grows outside best in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8 to 11

Do you grow Nagami kumquats? If so, please tell us your top tips for ensuring a delicious harvest.
