Meiwa Kumquats

Meiwa kumquats got their name when they were imported to Japan from China during Japan’s Meiwa period of the 18th century. The Meiwa was imported to the U.S. in the early 1900s. Meiwa kumquats are a hybrid of Nagami and Marumi. They have a reputation for being the best kumquat to eat fresh, and are a very popular variety in Asia.

Characteristics:

• Smooth, bright orange, thick and sweet skin
• Oval to round shape fruit with two to five seeds
• Pulp is acidic, not especially juicy
• Produces white flowers in summer
• Produces fruit in late winter
• Excellent container variety
• Dwarf size; reaches 4 to 8 feet
• Full sun or part shade
• Cold hardy
• Grows outside best in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9 to 10
