One important consideration when choosing the type of blueberry for your garden is chill hours. A chill hour is an hour below 45 degrees (F) during winter. A plant’s chill hour requirement is what the plant needs in order to stay dormant during winter. Flower buds on the plant or even the canes can be damaged or killed by low temperatures that come too soon. Be sure to check the chill hours that plants in your region need to survive the winter months. If you’re in a warmer region, make sure that you select varieties that won’t need as much chill time.
