Orange Scones

Orange Scones

One of the joys of baking for a family brunch is making scones. I love making orange scones because I love the sweet flavor and light fragrance that comes with orange zest and orange juice in the scone batter. And this recipe is a breeze to bake.

Of course, there are many different ways to make scones. Some folks will tell you that they have to be big, firm, and cut into a triangular shape. Are they delicious that way? Certainly. Do you have to make your scones that way? Nope.

I like this drop-style method. I get all the light and fluffy fresh flavor of scones without, honestly, a ton of work. Remember, baking up something delicious for brunch doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. It just needs to be tasty. And these scones fit the bill.

When you serve scones, it’s a good idea to provide something for your guests to slather on them when they come out of the oven. Some people like butter. Others like lemon curd. I like orange marmalade. I know it sounds sort of redundant, but at my table, orange marmalade on top of orange scones is the way to go.

I’ve found that the best way to serve up my home-baked scones is to line a basket with a linen tea towel, and wrap them up to keep that oven-warm freshness. Once the scones hit the table, an open basket is an empty basket. Keep your brunch guests in mind when you make these scones—you may want to make a second batch!

Let us know how your scones turn out!

  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 8 to 12; Makes about 12 scones 1x
  • Category: Breakfast

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • Zest of one orange
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 5 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine flour, baking powder, orange zest, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Combine honey, butter, orange juice, yogurt, and egg in another mixing bowl. Whisk well.
  4. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix until just blended. If the batter is too thin, add a tablespoon of flour.
  5. Spoon a 2-inch scoop of scone dough onto the baking sheet, keeping scones about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the tops of the scones are lightly browned.
  7. Serve warm.

Have you tried this recipe? Freshly baked scones are a delicious treat—please tell us how they turned out for you.
