Grandma’s Spice Cookies

Have you ever heard of the saying: “Mother knows best”? Well, I want to modify it a bit and say that “Grandma knows best” — especially when it comes to baking mouth-watering cookies. Grandma’s Spice Cookies are made with a mash-up of various spices like ginger and cinnamon to give you a sweet, spicy, and homey treat. If you’re feeling peckish or rather homesick, this is something that you definitely want to whip up.

Grandma’s Spice Cookies are like a warm embrace from your loved ones. From the aromatic smell to the festive taste, every bite of this delectable delight will feel like coming home.

Growing up, my grandma always had a batch of these crispy, delicious cookies every time we would visit her house. Whenever I would miss her, I tried to make these cookies at home to feel close to her again, letting the aroma fill my house. Because of this, these cookies will always have a special place in my heart (and my kitchen).

If you never had the chance to try these growing up, I think that now’s the perfect time to bake them at home. The steps are super simple and the ingredients are readily available. All you need are your spices, some all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, brown sugar, vegetable shortening, molasses, and granulated sugar.

Once you have Grandma’s Spice Cookies ready, you’re one step closer to making this heart-warming, cozy, and homey treat in the comfort of your kitchen.

And while grandmothers always have the best-smelling kitchens, yours can be almost as good. When you bake up these incredible spice cookies, they’ll do more than just satisfy that sweet-tooth craving—they’ll remind you of family.

  • Category: Bakery

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup chopped candied ginger (2 ounces)
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter-flavored vegetable shortening, at room temperature
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, ground ginger, baking soda, 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon, and salt. Add the candied ginger and toss with a fork to mix.
  3. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the brown sugar and vegetable shortening on medium-high speed for 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. With the mixer running, add the egg and molasses, then gradually add the flour mixture, mixing only until all the dry ingredients are moistened.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour or up to 1 day.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Using a cookie scoop, shape the dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in the cinnamon-sugar and place on baking sheets 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 12 minutes until lightly browned, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely. The cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or frozen for up to 1 month.
