Chewy Maple Sugar Cookies

You can never go wrong with soft, fluffy sugar cookies, but you can go above and beyond — and that’s by adding maple syrup into the mix to create Chewy Maple Sugar Cookies!

The earthiness and richness of the maple syrup complement the sugary and vanilla flavor you would normally taste in regular sugar cookies. Plus, its gooey consistency makes the cookies even softer and chewier in the center and perfectly crispy on the outside.

Besides adding maple syrup, I also like to change the sugar from basic white sugar to dark brown granulated sugar. This will add an extra layer of texture and flavor to the recipe that you don’t want to miss out on. While I do recommend you use dark brown sugar, light brown sugar should work just as well.

After baking your cookies, the cherry on top will be the maple icing which I’ll teach you how to make from scratch. You will only need simple ingredients like melted unsalted butter, heavy cream, confectioner’s sugar, and — of course, our star of the show — maple syrup.

After combining these ingredients and mixing them until smooth, you can drizzle as much or as little as you want on your cookies. I personally love to go all out, so I drizzle a lot. Sometimes, I also like to top it off with a garnish of roasted pecans.

This is only optional, but if you want to further enhance the texture and earthy flavor of your cookies, this is a good option. Otherwise, you can leave them plain and enjoy them to your heart’s desire.

I honestly can’t express my love for the Chewy Maple Sugar Cookies in just a few words, but hopefully, I’ve convinced you enough to try them for yourself.

  • Yield: 24 cookies 1x
  • Category: Bakery

Ingredients

Scale
  • Cookies
    • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
    • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    • 3 egg yolks
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • Maple Icing
    • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
    • 1/4 cup heavy cream
    • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
    • 3–3 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

  1. For the cookies: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and 1 1/4 cups of the granulated sugar on medium-high speed until combined. Add the egg yolks, vanilla, and maple syrup. Slowly add the flour mixture and mix just until combined.
  4. Put the remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar in a small bowl. Using a cookie scoop, shape the dough into 2-inch balls, then roll them in the sugar to coat. Place on the prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  5. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the tops of the cookies start to crack.
  6. Cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. For the maple icing: In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter, cream, and maple syrup. Slowly add the confectioners’ sugar and mix until smooth.
  8. Drizzle the icing over the cooled cookies and serve.

Are you a fan of maple? Have you tried making these Chewy Maple Sugar Cookies?
