Home Remedies & Health Benefits of Sage

Home Remedies & Health Benefits of Sage

Sage or salvia, which means “to heal” or “save,” has been revered for its healing benefits for centuries. Whether you add some chopped sage to your salad, drink it as a tea, or apply the essential oil to your body, sage can help sharpen your mind, relieve aches and pains, lower your cholesterol, alleviate menopause symptoms, and ward off cancer. It’s also been linked to younger-looking skin, bone health, and oral health.

Sage is used as a natural cleaning agent, a pesticide, and ritual cleansing in the form of smudging.

Blood Sugar Health

Clinical studies of sage extract have shown to lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity, both of which can lessen the chance of developing type 2 diabetes and improve the health of those with diabetes.

Cancer Prevention

Studies have noted that sage—with its high level of antioxidants—may fight certain types of cancer, including those of the mouth, colon, liver, cervix, breast, skin, and kidney. Though more research is needed, sage has shown promise in suppressing cancer cells as well as stimulating cell death.

Memory and Brain Health

Sage can support your brain and memory in several ways. First, sage is loaded with antioxidants, which have been shown to aid your brain’s defense system. Sage also appears to stop the breakdown of acetylcholine (ACH), the chemical messenger that has a role in memory. ACH levels appear to fall in Alzheimer’s disease. In one study of patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, those taking the sage extract performed better on tests that measured memory, problem-solving, reasoning, and other cognitive abilities.

Low doses of sage improved memory in healthy adults, while higher doses elevated mood and increased alertness, calmness, and general well-being.

Bottom Line

While some further medical studies might be required to confirm the health benefits of sage, eating your own home-grown varieties is a great way to control what you eat and ensure a healthier diet.
