Christy PageSeptember is here, and it’s time to roll up our sleeves! While the summer garden’s winding down, there’s still plenty to do as we transition into fall. If you’re like me, you’re probably eyeing those last tomatoes and wondering what to plant next.

In this issue of Food Gardening Magazine, we’re getting down to business with practical advice for the autumn garden and preparing for your winter garden. We’ve got zone-specific planting guides, tips on extending your harvest, and some clever DIY projects to tackle before the frost sets in.

I’m particularly excited about our article on harvesting and preserving herbs for winter use. There’s nothing like having a stash of home-grown herbs to liven up those hearty stews and soups when the weather turns cold. And for those of you looking to keep your green thumb active year-round, don’t miss our guide on growing edible flowers indoors – it’s a great way to add some fresh flavor to your meals even when the garden’s under snow.

This issue is packed with practical tips and tricks that I’ve found useful in my own garden, and I hope you’ll find them just as helpful. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, there’s something here for everyone.

  • What to Plant in September in Zones 4-6: Discover the best crops to plant as summer fades in cooler northern regions.
  • What to Plant in September in Zones 7-8: Learn about fall planting options for these transition zones.
  • What to Plant in September in Zones 9-10: Explore late-season planting opportunities in warmer southern areas.
  • How to Train Squash to Grow Vertically (with video!): Maximize your garden space with this smart growing technique.
  • How to Make DIY Concrete Stepping Stones for a Garden (with video!): Add a personal touch to your garden paths with this fun project.
  • How to Harvest Fresh Herbs in the Fall to Use All Winter (with video!): Preserve the flavors of summer to enjoy throughout the colder months.
  • Planting Seeds of Joy: The Perfect Kids Vegetable Garden for Your Little Sprout (with video!): Inspire the next generation of gardeners with these kid-friendly ideas.
  • How to Build a Pole Bean Teepee Trellis (with video!): Create an attractive and functional support for your climbing beans.
  • The Art and Science of Growing Edible Flowers Indoors: Bring color and flavor to your indoor space with these beautiful, edible blooms.

In this edition of Food Gardening Magazine, you’ll find Gardening Guide Close-Ups that focus on apples, kale, pumpkins, carrots, and potatoes to help you make the most of these fall favorites. These articles provide valuable tips and advice, and you’ll have instant access to the premium gardening guides themselves, too. From adapting to climate change to maximizing your harvest, these articles will help you become a more knowledgeable and successful food gardener.

  • Apple-Growing Adaptation Strategies for Climate Change: Learn how to keep your apple trees thriving in changing conditions.
  • Overwintering Kale: From Frost to Feast: Discover how to extend your kale harvest well into the colder months.

  • Why Are My Carrots Bitter? Uncover the reasons behind bitter carrots and how to grow sweeter ones.
  • Supercharging Your Potato Harvest: Learn techniques to increase your potato yield for a bountiful harvest.

Of course, we can’t forget about the delicious recipes that come along with these featured foods. These recipes celebrate the flavors of fall and are sure to warm you up on chilly autumn days.

  • Baked Apple Chips – A healthy, crispy snack that captures the essence of fall.
