Eating Like You Live on a Small Farm

A Good-Natured Tale and a Seven-Day Meal Plan

By Don Nicholas

Meal Plan

Imagine waking up to the rooster’s crow (or your smartphone alarm with a rooster ringtone) and heading to the backyard to gather eggs from happy hens, pick dew-kissed tomatoes, or snip some fragrant herbs. That’s the dream of farm living—one that doesn’t require owning acres of land, just a commitment to embracing fresh, homegrown, or locally sourced food. For this week-long meal plan, we’re celebrating the spirit of small farm living, inspired by crops grown across America and the humble magic of your home garden.

A Week of Farm-Inspired Meals

Day 1: Welcome to Farm Life

  • Breakfast: Spinach and goat cheese omelet with fresh-baked whole grain toast.
  • Lunch: Roasted vegetable and quinoa salad (zucchini, carrots, and cherry tomatoes) with a honey-lime vinaigrette.
  • Snack: Handful of roasted spiced nuts (walnuts and pecans from small farms).
  • Dinner: Herb-roasted chicken with mashed sweet potatoes and steamed green beans.
  • Dessert: Blackberry crisp with a dollop of whipped cream.

Fresh Fish Tacos

Day 2: The Salsa Garden Celebration

  • Breakfast: Huevos rancheros with fresh salsa made from garden tomatoes, jalapeños, and cilantro.
  • Lunch: Avocado and black bean salad with a squeeze of lime.
  • Snack: Homemade tortilla chips with guacamole.
  • Dinner: Grilled fish tacos with slaw made from homegrown cabbage and a drizzle of tangy yogurt sauce.
  • Dessert: Lime sorbet with a sprinkle of sea salt.

Provençal Vegetable Soup

Day 3: Cozy Vermont Vibes

  • Lunch: Root vegetable soup (carrots, potatoes, and parsnips) with crusty sourdough bread.
  • Snack: Cheddar cheese and apple slices.
  • Dinner: Slow-cooked pork shoulder with maple-roasted Brussels sprouts and garlic mashed potatoes.
  • Dessert: Apple crisp with maple syrup.

Peach Cobbler

Day 4: A Taste of Georgia

  • Lunch: Fig and goat cheese salad with arugula and a balsamic glaze.
  • Snack: Homemade granola bars with peanuts and dried blueberries.

  • Dessert: Churros with a dark chocolate dipping sauce.

Oregano-Lemon Grilled Shrimp Skewers

Day 6: California Sunshine

  • Breakfast: Avocado toast with a poached egg and a side of orange slices.
  • Lunch: Grilled chicken Caesar salad with homemade dressing.
  • Snack: Handpicked citrus fruits like tangerines or mandarins.
  • Dinner: Grilled shrimp skewers with lemon and garlic, paired with wild rice and a side of sautéed zucchini.
  • Dessert: Lemon bars dusted with powdered sugar.

Easy Banana Nut Bread

Day 7: Back to Basics

  • Breakfast: A farm-style breakfast bowl with roasted potatoes, scrambled eggs, and garden herbs.
  • Lunch: A hearty lentil and vegetable stew with crusty bread.
  • Snack: A slice of homemade banana bread with a smear of honey butter.
  • Dinner: Roast chicken with a side of ratatouille (eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, and bell peppers).
  • Dessert: Strawberry shortcake with whipped cream.

Tips for Living the Small Farm Dream (Even on a Small Scale)

  • Start Small: Plant easy-to-grow vegetables like tomatoes, zucchini, or herbs in containers.
  • Visit Farmers’ Markets: Supplement your homegrown goods with local produce.
  • Preserve the Harvest: Freeze, can, or dry excess produce for use in the off-season.
  • Make It a Family Affair: Involve kids or friends in planting, picking, and cooking.

Let this meal plan inspire you to savor the farm-to-table lifestyle, whether you’re on 10 acres or in a tiny urban backyard. Life tastes better when it’s freshly picked!

Try It Yourself

These meals are not only healthy and delicious but easy to adapt to what’s in season or what’s growing in your garden. For specific recipes, visit the Food Gardening Network cookbooks and recipe collections or let us know what you’d love to see in our next recipe series.
