Cheddar-Thyme Biscuits

Biscuits are usually classified as a snack, mostly enjoyed during downtime or savored in the afternoon with a nice cup of tea. But, if you can’t get enough biscuits at snack time, it’s time to get creative so you can enjoy them all day long!

How do you do this? By whipping up a batch of cheddar-thyme biscuits, of course!

Cheese and thyme are constant companions, so melding them together in biscuit form makes perfect sense. Cheddar cheese, especially when it’s still young, can yield a mild, smooth, and creamy taste. The texture is also a little bit melty and moist, with slight buttery undertones that mix wonderfully with your biscuit batter. A little older and cheddar cheese can have a sharper taste, with a nuttier and more crumbly texture.

Thyme, of course, has an earthy, minty, and slightly lemony zest. Combined with cheddar cheese, you get an amazing blend of salty and sour with hints of mint. Adding in thyme fresh from your home garden also gives your cheddar-thyme biscuits a delectable aroma that makes them hard to resist!

The best part about making cheddar-thyme biscuits is that your kitchen will smell fantastic while they’re baking. Once the bottom of the biscuits reaches a nice, golden-brown color, they’re ready to be enjoyed whenever you please. You can munch on them for breakfast, especially during busy mornings, or pair them up with a hot, savory bowl of vegetable soup for lunch. If you’re preparing a juicy chicken dinner, these cheddar-thyme biscuits can serve as the cherry on top of your light but hearty meal. Of course, you can still eat them the classic way — with a delightful cup of tea!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and cream of tartar. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter or a fork until it is the size of peas.
  3. Make a well in the center of the mixture and measure the milk, cheese, and thyme into the bowl. Gently mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Roll or pat out the dough on a floured surface to 3/4 inch thick. Cut into circles and place on a baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the bottoms of the biscuits are brown.
