Some tips from our community:
On succession planting: “I have noticed that when my first crop of bush beans begin to taper off, gently bend the plant horizontally on the ground. Each leaf node will put up another stem which in effect is a brand new plant., which grows and produces a crop. You can get as many as six new plants from each original. This also works with snapdragons. I’m going to try this with other plants.” – Glen
On container gardening: “I get 5 gallon buckets for 5 bucks at Home Depot and drill 2 holes in the bottom for drainage. It works for new plants and they can move up to a larger pot when they get too big.”
On saving overwatered basil plants: “YES, Basil had been that ONE herb that I have trouble with. One thing is that it REALLY LIKES to be used. Frequent snipping off the tops of the little branches keeps it growing and seems to keep it form having thoughts of non-survivial. I add it pretty much every meat -vegetable-stir fry-egg dish and the basil LOVES TO BE USED UP.” – Ruth
