Unconventional Thanksgiving Traditions

Unconventional Thanksgiving Traditions

A Taste of Quirkiness at the Dinner Table

By Don Nicholas | November 22, 2023

Thanksgiving is a time-honored American tradition where families gather around the dinner table to express gratitude and share a hearty meal. While the turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie often take center stage, many families across the United States have developed quirky and unusual traditions that make their Thanksgiving dinners truly unique. In this post, we’ll explore some of these charming and offbeat customs that add an extra layer of warmth and nostalgia to the holiday season.

The Cranberry Conundrum

Our journey into unconventional Thanksgiving traditions begins with a sweet and tangy twist on cranberries. In my family, we had not one but two cranberry dishes gracing our Thanksgiving table. The first was a jellied cranberry sauce straight from a can, maintaining its iconic cylindrical shape. The other was my father’s homemade cranberry concoction, bursting with fresh flavors, oranges, and walnuts. Surprisingly, my childhood pickiness found its exception at the Thanksgiving table as I declared my love for the canned cranberry jelly. This culinary debate became a cherished part of our Thanksgiving tradition, and both cranberry dishes earned their place at our holiday feast.

The “Potluck Extravaganza”

While some families stick to a well-established menu year after year, others embrace the spirit of diversity and adventure. Enter the “Potluck Extravaganza.” Instead of the host or hostess bearing the brunt of meal preparation, each guest brings a dish of their choosing to share. This potluck-style Thanksgiving dinner allows for an eclectic mix of culinary delights, from traditional turkey and stuffing to international dishes and experimental creations. It’s a fantastic way to showcase the diverse tastes and talents of your loved ones while fostering a spirit of togetherness.

The Gratitude Jar

Thanksgiving is about more than just food; it’s a time to reflect on gratitude and thankfulness. One charming tradition that has gained popularity in recent years is the “Gratitude Jar.” Guests are encouraged to write down what they are thankful for on small pieces of paper throughout the day. These notes are then placed in a jar and read aloud during dinner, reminding everyone of the blessings they hold dear. It’s a heartfelt tradition that helps everyone connect on a deeper level and appreciate the true meaning of the holiday.

The Post-Feast Parade

After indulging in a delicious Thanksgiving meal, many families opt for a leisurely post-feast parade. This tradition involves taking a stroll around the neighborhood or local park to walk off those extra helpings of pie. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the crisp fall air, catch up with family members, and create lasting memories while burning off a few calories in the process.

Thanksgiving is a time for cherished traditions and creating lasting memories with loved ones. While the classic dishes of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce remain staples, it’s the quirky and unusual traditions that make each family’s celebration truly special. Whether it’s a cranberry debate, a potluck extravaganza, a gratitude jar, or a post-feast parade, these unconventional customs add a touch of whimsy and heartwarming moments to our Thanksgiving dinners.

As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving, let’s not forget to embrace the diversity and uniqueness of our traditions, for they are what make this holiday so unforgettable. From all of us here at GreenPrints, we wish you a Thanksgiving filled with joy, laughter, and a hearty helping of the extraordinary.
