The sun rises, the earth warms.
I walk out into the clear air
into a field of flowers.
In the distance, a farmer sings
a song of the land, of the seasons.
He does not see me, or pretends not to.
He has a secret, I think,
something he will not share with anyone.
Maybe he knows the names of the flowers,
or the meaning of my song.
I want to ask him, but I do not.
I am a stranger here, a trespasser.
I do not belong here.
I turn back, retracing my steps.
The sun is higher now, the air hotter.
The flowers are opening, one by one.
About the author: Eniola Ajao is a soul whose love for gardening is only matched by her passion for writing poems.
