What do you get when you cross a gardener with a wordsmith? A person with a green thumb who can offer some sage advice and knows a good gardening pun! Gardeners are some of the most creative people around, and they often find ways to work puns into their conversations (and sometimes even their names).
Here are some of our favorite gardening puns:
- This is your good seed for the day.
- Do you have Ants in your plants?
- Eat, drink and be rosemary.
- Well, dear, you are all dressed up with nowhere to grow.

- If you could only seed between the lines.
- and my favorite… Don’t moss around. I need some peas and quiet.
Oh, the gardening puns could go on and on, indeed! It’s just one of rose things that make me cackle.

My Mother’s Favorite Joke
From Sister Francis Anne Gilchrist, C.S.J. of Latham, NY
Here’s my mother’s favorite joke. Every summer she would ask me to tell it to one of her visitors.
A woman who proudly thought she knew everything there was to know about flower gardening nevertheless hired a man from the local garden store to come for a consultation. As they walked around the back of the house, she told him what she wanted here and what she wanted there.
When they came around to the front of the house with its lovely, large porch, she declared, “Now I want some red saliva plants in front of the porch, lots of red saliva.”
He pondered a moment, then replied, “Well, if you want lots of red salivas, you might enjoy, in front of them, some white spitunias.” ❖
