How to Care for Sunflowers

How to Care for Sunflowers

The sun-sational secrets of how to care for sunflowers and become the envy of your neighborhood!

By Amanda MacArthur | June 20, 2024

Buckle up, buttercups, because I’m about to take you on a wild ride through my sunflower-growing escapade! Actually, to be honest, it was my neighbor’s escapade because he admired the sunflower fence I’d grown last year so much he wanted my advice on how to care for sunflowers!

He gave me full reign to do what I wanted, so, armed with an assortment of sunflower seeds and a whole lot of enthusiasm, I set out to make my vision a reality. I had seeds for every occasion—the “Mammoth” variety for those who dream big, the “Teddy Bear” for the softies, and even some funky rouge ones for the rebels out there. Though, I have to say, I wish that our Sunflower Gardening in America GuideBook on how to care for sunflowers had been around when I walked into this!

In any case, I tossed those seeds around like confetti at a parade, making sure to wait until the threat of frost had passed and the soil was nice and toasty. And then, the waiting game began. I’d wake up every morning, race outside in my bunny slippers, and stare intently at the ground, willing those little seeds to sprout. I didn’t want my neighbor to think I’d wasted his money on all these different sunflowers without knowing how to care for sunflowers, you know?

When they finally did sprout, I swear I heard a choir of angels singing in the background (and my relief!). Those baby sunflowers were popping up left and right, like they were in a race to see who could reach the sun first! Who knew learning how to care for sunflowers was so easy?

As they grew, I learned a thing or two about caring for these sun-loving beauties. The first time I set out on my sunflower fence project I was just hoping for the best, but in this case, I felt responsible for making them grow. So here’s what I took away from it:

Firstly, sunflowers are the ultimate sun worshippers. They’re like those people who camp out on the beach all day, following the sun’s every move. So, I made sure to plant them in a spot where they could soak up those golden rays to their hearts’ content.

Secondly, sunflowers are pretty chill when it comes to soil. They’re not picky eaters, but they do appreciate a well-draining, slightly alkaline soil buffet. I decided to treat my sunflower babies to some gourmet compost to really get them growing.

Watering was a bit of a balancing act. I had to channel my inner Goldilocks and find that “just right” amount. Not too much, not too little, but enough to encourage those roots to grow deep and strong. I’d give them a good, deep drink once a week, and more often if the weather was hotter than a jalapeno pepper.

Now, let’s talk about fertilizer. Sunflowers are the teenagers of the plant world—they’re always hungry! I made sure to give them a hearty dose of slow-release fertilizer at the beginning of summer, and then again when they started strutting their stuff with those gorgeous blooms.

Of course, every garden party has its uninvited guests. Weeds thought they could crash the sunflower soirée, but I was ready for them. I channeled my inner kung-fu master and tilled between the rows like a boss. Once my sunflower squad was tall enough, they totally shaded out those pesky weeds like they were yesterday’s news.

Pests and diseases? Pfft, my sunflowers laughed in the face of danger. I mean, sure, a few beetles tried to nibble on their leaves, but my flowers were like, “Is that all you got?” Keeping the garden clean and tidy was like having a bouncer at the velvet rope—no troublemakers allowed!

By the end of the summer, my backyard was like a scene straight out of a Van Gogh painting. Sunflowers as far as the eye could see, stretching their giant faces towards the sky. Some of those show-offs even grew taller than me, and I’m no shorty!

So, my fellow gardening enthusiasts, if you’re ready to add some serious wow factor to your green space, give sunflowers a whirl! With a dash of TLC, a sprinkle of sunflower savvy, and a whole lot of love, you’ll be the proud parent of a sunflower family that will make the neighbors green with envy.

And who knows? Maybe you’ll even start talking to your sunflowers like I do. Don’t worry; I won’t judge. After all, every sunflower needs a little pep talk now and then!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to plant sunflowers again! This time I have consulted our Sunflower Gardening in America GuideBook on how to care for sunflowers, and I suggest you do too—it includes all the details you need to plant your own prolific sunflower garden, plus some pretty spectacular varietals!
