March is a time of rebirth. Spring is upon us, the temperatures are warming, and our gardens are seeing the benefits. The month may start dark, cold and gloomy for most of us, but by the end of the month we should all be holding a seed of hope for Spring. You may even see tender shoots starting to poke up from the ground.
In our March issue of GreenPrints we are embracing this rebirth and the warm feelings of joy that it gifts us. Pat Stone talks about coaxing seeds to life in A Packet of Lessons. There are equal parts joy and frustration when attempting to grow seedlings. Spring Prep and Small Steps by Amanda MacArthur shares with us all of the things we should be doing to get our gardens ready for Spring. Now is the time to get some great prep work done! Mike McGrath keeps us giggling with Grilled Peaches. How do you keep your plants warm during an unexpected warm up and then frost?
Our Stories from the Garden are full of the promise of Spring. Melanie Files helps us welcome this special time of year with The Robin’s Reign of Spring in West Virginia. Do you welcome robins in the Spring or glare as they peck at your garden? The Enchanted Garden by Valerie Da-Silva Curtiss brings us along on her journey as she weaved “an old-world English cottage garden into existence.” In Our Soothing Fountain, Carole Fleischman develops a brilliant plan to help her enjoy the soothing sounds of a backyard water fountain.
Our Plants We Love for March are radishes, broccoli and cabbage. These vegetables do not have to be a sideshow act, they can definitely be the star of the show. And speaking of stars, don’t miss Pickle Mania Sweeps the Nation by Don Nicholas. We’re not just pickling cucumbers over here! Another not-to-miss article is The Golden Bloom: Healthful Chamomile? by Bill Dugan. Did you know that chamomile could be so helpful? It is definitely a must-have for my garden this year.
March has a lot of other wonderful things to explore. In The Secret Life of Herbs, you will enjoy ancient tales as you embark on a journey through the countryside. This StoryBook follows the footsteps of Elara, a wise herbalist whose wanderlust and compassion lead her to the quaint village of Greenfield. Herbs are such a wonderful addition to our lives that we knew we needed a StoryBook all about their wonderful qualities. Our Garden to Table Recipes focus on the Irish. What is timelier for cooking in March than corned beef, potatoes and Irish soda bread? Join Don on his culinary travels and whip up a few of these dishes in your kitchen.
