I love the month of June. Finally, my morning treks outside, shortly after the sun rises, no longer require a coat. I can walk around and embrace the new day without feeling the chill that used to make me want to rush back indoors. I have three dogs, and they do not like to be rushed!
My typical June morning starts with all three dogs circling me, eager to start the day. They love the first morning visit outdoors. Their cute little noses twitch in the air as they take in the scent of everything growing. They follow me along as we check the growth of our various plants.
Towards the end of this daily tour, it’s time for the bus stop. The neighborhood bus stop happens to be right at the corner of our property. I think my pups are as nostalgic for my daughters’ school days as I am. Each morning, they eagerly watch the kids walk to the bus stop, tails wagging. They look down the road for the approaching bus and stand guard as the kids climb aboard. Come mid-June, we inevitably have a few days of confusion. They wait hopefully for both kids and bus, which never come. I try to explain that school is out for Summer break, but as smart as they are, it takes about a week for them to stop hoping.
While the dogs enjoy their breakfast, I savor my morning cup of coffee. I like to sit by an open window to hear the birds, bees, and world come to life. I read through a couple of articles and plan out my day. There are so many things on my to-do list come June. With everything growing, I need to make sure each plant gets the attention it needs. I weed, pluck, water, and coax my plants. I figure if I sweet-talk them, they’ll be more apt to grow for me. I can’t be the only one who spends her days talking to plants, can I?
All three dogs like to help in various ways. Sallie, the oldest, likes to stand guard. She is constantly on alert, watching up and down the street to make sure no one dares intrude on our oasis. Ranger, the middle pup, loves to run around and play. He may be getting on in years, but he still has a very playful spirit. He’ll happily circle the yard over and over again. Gigi, the baby of the group, is intensely curious. She’s the one at my side, peering at the plants. She may think she’s helping—or she might just be trying to steal a raspberry or two.
Eventually, when the sun is bright overhead, all four of us are tired out, and we retreat to the shade for a much-needed rest and snack. I’ve found that this is my favorite time of day. The main chores are done, and I can relax with an iced tea and my three faithful companions at my feet. While they doze off, I’m able to simply enjoy the beauty of nature around me.
This is what I love about June. The days are happy and full. The warmth of the sun and the smell of the growing garden fill my senses. I am at peace, and I hope you are as well. ❖
