Ingredients

  • For the meat sauce:
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 pound ground beef
    • 1/2 pound Italian sausage (casings removed)
    • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
    • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
    • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 2 teaspoons dried basil
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • For the cheese mixture:
    • 15 oz ricotta cheese
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (or 1 tsp dried)
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Other ingredients:
    • 9–12 lasagna noodles (regular or no-boil)
    • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
    • Extra Parmesan for topping

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce:
    In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  2. Add the ground beef and sausage, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
