Welcome to the French Toast Recipe Collection

Five fresh takes on a breakfast favorite!

By Amanda MacArthur

french toast

Let’s be honest – regular French toast is pretty great on its own. But why stop there when you can take this breakfast classic to new heights? These five creative recipes show how a few clever twists can transform ordinary French toast into something that’ll make everyone at your table sit up and take notice.

If you’re the type who values sleep over standing at the stove in the morning (and who doesn’t?), the make-ahead options are going to be your new best friends. The Overnight French Toast Bake lets you do all the work the night before – just layer chunks of challah bread with surprise pockets of cream cheese, pour over a cinnamon-vanilla custard, and refrigerate. In the morning, add a buttery streusel topping if you want to, and pop it in the oven. While you’re sipping coffee, it transforms into a caramelized, custardy masterpiece that’s part breakfast, part dessert, and entirely delicious. Similarly, the Citrus-Cranberry French Toast Bake brings bright flavors to your morning with the sunny taste of fresh oranges cutting through tart cranberries. The orange-infused custard soaks into the bread, and the whole thing bakes up into a pretty impressive dish that’s perfect when you have houseguests to feed.

For those mornings when you want something a little special without the fuss, look no further than London Fog French Toast. Inspired by the popular tea latte, this version infuses your regular French toast custard with Earl Grey tea. It’s a simple change that makes a world of difference – the subtle bergamot flavor paired with a touch of maple syrup takes ordinary bread to new heights. It’s fancy enough to feel special but easy enough for a lazy Sunday morning when you want something better than the usual.

When you can’t decide between sweet and savory (a breakfast dilemma we all face), the French Toast Eggs Benedict and 20-Minute Monte Cristo have you covered. The Eggs Benedict version is a stroke of genius – instead of English muffins, thick slices of French toast create the base for poached eggs and hollandaise. The slight sweetness of the French toast works surprisingly well with the rich, buttery sauce and runny yolks. It’s brunch-worthy food that you can make at home. The Monte Cristo takes things in another direction by turning a ham and cheese sandwich into French toast. The whole sandwich gets dipped in maple syrup and gives way to melty cheese and savory ham inside, and you’ve got a 20-minute breakfast that feels like you’re getting away with something.

These recipes show that French toast doesn’t have to be complicated to be special. Sometimes it’s about making things easier (hello, overnight bakes), sometimes it’s about unexpected flavor combinations (we see you, Earl Grey tea), and sometimes it’s about breaking the rules of what breakfast “should” be (looking at you, savory French toast creations). Whether you’re cooking for a crowd on Christmas morning or just treating yourself on a random Tuesday, these French toast variations prove that a little creativity goes a long way in the kitchen.
