Skyscraper Sunflower

By Laura Logan

Plant Profile

Skyscraper Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus Skyscraper) are an impressive variety of sunflowers known for their towering height and large, vibrant blooms. These sunflowers can reach astonishing heights, often exceeding 10 feet tall, making them a striking addition to any garden or landscape. The flowers themselves are typically large (up to 14 inches across) and golden-yellow, with dark centers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. They need about 70-75 days to reach maturity.

Soil pH

Skyscraper Sunflowers thrive in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range between 6.0 to 7.5. It’s important to ensure the soil is rich in nutrients to support the vigorous growth of these tall plants.

Sun Requirements

As their name suggests, Skyscraper Sunflowers require full sun to flourish. They should be planted in an area that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Insufficient sunlight may result in stunted growth and smaller blooms.

Watering Requirements

While Skyscraper Sunflowers are relatively drought-tolerant once established, consistent watering is crucial, especially during the early stages of growth and during hot, dry periods. Water deeply, ensuring the soil is evenly moist but not waterlogged. However, avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot and other issues. A general rule of thumb is to water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.

Best Plant Hardiness Zones

Skyscraper Sunflowers are well-suited for planting in USDA hardiness zones 4-9. They thrive in regions with warm Summers and sufficient growing seasons. In these zones, they can reach their maximum height and produce abundant blooms throughout the growing season.

Additional Tips

Provide support: Due to their towering height, Skyscraper Sunflowers may require staking or support to prevent them from toppling over, especially in windy conditions.

Space properly: Once your plants are established, thin your Skyscraper Sunflowers to 18 inches apart to allow for adequate air circulation and to prevent overcrowding.

Fertilize sparingly: While Skyscraper Sunflowers are not heavy feeders, incorporating a balanced fertilizer into the soil during planting can promote healthy growth and robust blooms.

With proper care and attention to their soil, sun, and watering requirements, Skyscraper Sunflowers can reward gardeners with an awe-inspiring display of towering beauty and vibrant blooms.
