Moulin Rouge Sunflower

By Laura Logan

Plant Profile

Moulin Rouge Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus Moulin Rouge) are a captivating variety of pollenless sunflowers prized for their unique and dramatic appearance. Unlike traditional sunflowers with yellow petals, Moulin Rouge Sunflowers feature deep burgundy to mahogany-colored petals that surround a dark center, creating a striking contrast in the garden. These sunflowers typically grow to heights of 5-6 feet, with flower heads reaching 5-6 inches in diameter. Moulin Rouge Sunflowers produce several blooms per stalk, making them a great choice for cut flowers.

Soil pH

Moulin Rouge Sunflowers thrive in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH range between 6.0 to 7.5. They can tolerate a range of soil types, including loamy and sandy soils, as long as the soil is fertile and enriched with organic matter.

Sun Requirements

As sun-loving plants, Moulin Rouge Sunflowers require full sun to thrive. Plant them in an area that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth and flowering. Insufficient sunlight may result in reduced growth and fewer blooms.

Watering Requirements

While Moulin Rouge Sunflowers are relatively drought-tolerant once established, consistent watering is essential, especially during the early stages of growth and during hot, dry periods. Water deeply and evenly, ensuring the soil is consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plants can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Best Plant Hardiness Zones

Moulin Rouge Sunflowers are well-suited for planting in USDA hardiness zones 3-9. These zones provide the ideal climate conditions for sunflowers, with warm Summers and sufficient growing seasons. In these zones, Moulin Rouge Sunflowers can thrive and produce an abundance of stunning blooms throughout the Summer months.

Additional Tips

Bring beauty inside: Moulin Rouge Sunflowers make great cut flowers, with their bold color and low pollen level. Build a bold bouquet with contrasting yellow sunflowers.

Deadhead spent flowers: Remove faded or spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prolong the flowering period.

Fertilize sparingly: Moulin Rouge Sunflowers do not require heavy fertilization but can benefit from a balanced fertilizer applied during the growing season to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

With their deep burgundy petals and dark centers, Moulin Rouge Sunflowers add a touch of drama and elegance to any garden or landscape. With proper care and attention to their soil, sun, and watering requirements, these sunflowers can thrive and become a stunning focal point in any outdoor space.
