Summer gardening was a family affair, but Winter brought a different kind of challenge. Layered against the chill, I’d brave the cold to tend our plants with our faithful dog, Jackson, always by my side. His loyalty knew no bounds, even when faced with the frosty air.

Jackson wasn’t just a pet; he was a guardian. From the moment he entered our lives as a surprise Christmas gift, he became an integral part of our family, watching over us with unwavering devotion.

One Winter Day, as my husband ventured into our makeshift greenhouse, Jackson stationed himself outside, back turned to the garden, eyes alert. It was a sight to behold, his silent vigilance, a testament to his commitment.

But when my husband returned indoors, Jackson’s absence caught his attention. Peering out the window, we witnessed an unexpected scene: Jackson, ever the vigilant sentry, standing watch over the garden, his loyalty on full display.

Moved by his dedication, I realized the depth of Jackson’s bond with us. He wasn’t just a companion; he was our protector, willing to brave the elements to ensure our safety.

As my husband called out to him, Jackson’s confusion melted into joy, his tail wagging with unrestrained happiness. In that moment, we understood the true meaning of loyalty—a lesson taught to us by our beloved canine companion. ❖

About the Author: Lori Futcher is a freelance writer based in Idaho. While she hasn’t yet braved Winter gardening in her new home, she draws inspiration from her experiences with her faithful companion, Jackson, whose unwavering loyalty continues to inspire her writing.
