You sense that familiar chill in the air, a gentle reminder that the seasons are shifting. Leaves cascade down in a vibrant display, painting the ground with hues of gold and crimson. Despite the lingering warmth of sunny days, there’s a quiet acknowledgment in our hearts that our cherished growing season is drawing to a close. It’s a time for cozy comforts, for raking leaves and lighting fires, for moments of introspection before the bustling holiday rush ensues. And amidst it all, there’s the enchantment of pumpkin carving, a whimsical tradition to welcome the spirits of the night.

Once tasked with a project on pumpkins, I found myself confessing a lack of experience in growing them. While my garden has flourished with Delicata squash and spaghetti squash, the Northwest climate hasn’t quite accommodated my dreams of cultivating watermelons. Yet, the abundance of squash varieties in farm stores never fails to delight. Among them, the Delicata squash holds a special place, its delicate sweetness a culinary joy. With a few minutes in the microwave and a sprinkle of brown sugar, it transforms into a delectable treat. And who could resist the allure of spaghetti squash, dressed simply with butter, salt, pepper, and a generous shower of Parmesan?

One rainy Autumn night, the world takes on a surreal beauty. The moon casts its silvery glow through wisps of mist, while clouds dance across the sky, framed by the silhouettes of tall pines. In this tranquil moment, with Winter looming on the horizon, there’s a lesson to be gleaned from the garden—a time for rest, rejuvenation, and quiet contemplation. As the seed catalogs begin to arrive in abundance, it’s an opportunity to dream of the garden’s potential and to savor the simple pleasures of hot cocoa and pumpkin chocolate cake. ❖
