Salty-sweet is a classic combo, but do you know why it’s so darn good? When you take your first bite, the salt opens up your taste buds and gets them ready so the rest tastes extra good. That’s why the caramel-y goodness of these bars is addictive.

Instructions

  1. Line a 9 x 13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper, leaving an overhang.
  2. Line the baking sheet with a layer of crackers, cutting them to fit if needed.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter. Add the brown sugar, milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla. Bring to a boil, then cook, stirring continuously, for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove from the heat and pour half the mixture over the crackers.
  5. Place another layer of crackers over the butter-sugar mixture. Pour the remaining butter-sugar mixture over the crackers. Top with a final layer of crackers.
  6. Put the semisweet chocolate chips and dark chocolate chips in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until melted. (Alternatively, melt the chocolate in a saucepan on the stovetop.)
  7. Pour the melted chocolate over the crackers and spread it evenly.
  8. Top with the toasted almonds and a bit of sea salt.
  9. Chill for at least 1 hour before cutting into bars to serve.
