Okra and Greens

Have a bumper crop of okra? Want to step up your side dish game with some down-home cooking? Fire up the stove—and maybe make some cornbread, too.




  1. Chop the onion.
  2. Wash the okra. Remove the stems.
  3. Chop the hot peppers.
  4. Warm the oil in a large steel pan over medium heat.
  5. Add the onions and sauté until the onions turn a golden brown.
  6. Add the hot peppers, okra, greens, and water to the pan.
  7. Bring the water to a simmer, then turn the heat to low.
  8. Cover the pan and continue to cook until the greens are tender.
  9. Cut the lemon and squeeze it over the dish before serving.
