The scone is such a basic yet luxurious breakfast item. With more personality than toast and more complex flavor than an English muffin, a Kumquat Scones just makes breakfast a joy. Add the sweet-tart goodness of kumquats to the mix, and you’ve got a great breakfast!

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Lightly grease a large baking sheet, or line with parchment, then grease.
  3. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Use a pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands to cut the butter into the flour mixture until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
  5. Stir in the applesauce and slice kumquats just enough to combine.
  6. Add the milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
  7. Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. Form them into balls and flatten them.
  8. Put the flattened dough on your greased baking sheet and cut into quarters.
  9. Bake for about 25 minutes, until the scones are golden brown and firm.
