Dill Seed Braided Bread

This easy bread looks beautiful and smells fantastic while it bakes. Serve it on the side with savory stews and soups, add your favorite fillings to make a tasty sandwich, or simply enjoy a slice toasted and topped with cream cheese and gravlax.

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast with 1 teaspoon of the sugar in warm water. Add the yogurt, onion, remaining sugar, butter, egg, dill seed, salt, and 1 cup flour. Beat in a mixer until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  2. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  3. Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide into thirds. Shape each portion into a 20-inch rope. Place ropes on a large, greased baking sheet and braid; pinch ends to seal and tuck under. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan to a wire rack to cool.
