  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ham, onion, celery, carrot, and garlic and cook, stirring, for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in the beans with their liquid, broth, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Uncover and cook for 5 to 10 minutes more.
  4. Ladle into bowls and serve.
